Arthur Demeter Matzkanin

Arthur “Art” Demeter Matzkanin of Hastings, previously of Owosso, Michigan, passed away on May 7, 2026, in Caledonia, Michigan, at the age of 78. He was born April 2, 1948, in Owosso, Michigan, the son of Alexander and Ruth (Bliss) Matzkanin.

Art graduated from Owosso High School in 1966 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Michigan State University in 1970. He worked for Sunoco as a Chemical Engineer before later serving with the State of Michigan and Consumers Power.

Art was a thoughtful and curious man who enjoyed reading and studying the Civil War and biographies of historical figures. He was also passionate about collecting rocks and coins, gardening, and watching birds. He was a faithful member of Grace Bible Church in Owosso.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Chester Matzkanin.

Art is survived by his sister, Martha (Matzkanin) Byington; brother-in-law, Robert Byington; niece, Sarah (Byington) Konynenbelt; nephew, Eric Byington; and grandnephews, Owen and Isaac Konynenbelt.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Owosso, Michigan.
