Barbara Jean Crummel, a loving and kind soul whose warmth touched the hearts of all who knew her, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2026, in Hastings, Michigan. Born on August 3, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, Barbara’s life was a testament to devotion, resilience, and joy.
Barbara graduated from John J. Pershing High School, a foundation that led her into a life marked by dedication and hard work. She began her career as a laborer at Holley Carburetor in Detroit, MI, before moving on to become a purchaser at the State Technical Institute and Rehabilitation Center, where she devoted many years before retiring. Her career reflected not only her determination but also her commitment to serving others and contributing meaningfully to her community.
Beyond her professional life, Barbara was known for her outgoing personality and generous spirit. Those who had the pleasure of knowing her remember a woman who was constantly filled with love, radiating kindness in every interaction. She found genuine joy in singing in the choir, her voice a beautiful expression of her vibrant spirit and faith. Barbara also delighted in watching John Wayne movies and “The Sound of Music,” simple pleasures that brought light and happiness to her days. Traveling with her beloved husband, Marvin “Buzz” Crummel, was a cherished passion, creating memories that would sustain her through life’s seasons.
Barbara’s family was her pride and joy. She was preceded in death by her son, Kenny James; her dear husband, Marvin “Buzz” Crummel; her parents, Elton Wayne and Bertha Kate (Essary) Russell; her brother, Ron Russell; and her sister, Carol (Ken) Lademan. Despite these profound losses, Barbara leaves behind a loving legacy through her daughter, Terry Harvath, and her cherished grandchildren: Charles James, Joseph Harvath, Katie Harvath, and Abby Harvath and 7 great grandchildren. Their love and presence stand as a living tribute to Barbara’s enduring influence and the roots she planted so deeply.
The service to honor Barbara’s life will begin with a visitation on April 11, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church located at 405 Michigan 37, Hastings, MI. This will be followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM, with a Luncheon to follow, a time intended for sharing stories, laughter, and the heartfelt memories that Barbara inspired.
Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association of Michigan.
In remembering Barbara Jean Crummel, one recalls more than her achievements and roles. It is her loving nature, her kindness, and her joyful approach to life and family that will remain imprinted in the hearts of everyone privileged to have known her. Her journey on this earth has ended, but the echoes of her spirit – strong, warm, and enduring – will live on within her family and friends forever.
