Betty Mae (Buehler) Usborne was born December 11, 1933, the youngest of five children born to Forrest and LuVada (Karcher) Buehler and the third generation of Buehler's born in the family homestead. Her siblings, Milton (Joyce), Vivian (Martin) Vierk, Velma (Robert) Humphrey, and Keith (Nyla), have all preceded Betty in death.
Betty attended the Freeport Schools and graduated in 1952.
Betty had a love for animals and over the years had every kind of domestic animal there is growing up on the family farm.
In her younger years Betty was a Camp Fire Girl, played softball on a women's league, was on a bowling league, enjoyed deer hunting, playing cards, especially euchre and cribbage, loved going to the Carlton Center & Irving Grange Halls to dance, was in 4-H as a youth and became a leader as an adult, was a member of Carlton's Ladies Hospital Guild, she enjoyed fishing in Sugar Bush Lake and having family gatherings there all of her life, needle point, reading, enjoyed working at vacation bible school in the summer, traveling, especially to New York to visit her cousins, Margaret and Harry, and presently, an honorary member of the Freeport Historical Society.
She was employed in the clerical department at E.W. Bliss, Freeport Elevator, Freeport Supply Store, Our Village General and Betty and her husband John owned and operated their dairy farm most of their lives.
On August 14, 1954, Betty married John Usborne Jr., and the couple had one son, John III, both preceded her in death.
Along with her nieces, nephews, cousins, and sister-in-law, Phyllis Usborne, Betty has two life-long loyal girlfriends, Phyllis (Postma) Tooker and Kate (Cappon) Hughes.
Betty died November 20, 2018.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on November 26, 2018 at the Girrbach Funeral Home in Hastings. The Funeral Service will follow visitation at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Freeport Historical Society, 127 Warren St., Freeport, MI 49325 or Great Lakes Caring Hospice.
