Catherine Moma passed away peacefully at her home on Monday evening June 24, 2024, at the age of 94. She was born February 25, 1930, the 5th of 7 children (5 brothers and 1 sister), to Carner and Clara Schondelmayer.
Catherine graduated from Thornapple Kellogg High School in 1948. She lived in Grand Rapids after graduation and painted murals in office buildings downtown as her job. She was always artistic, and it showed all through her life. She met the love of her life at a Middleville vs. Hastings football game, and they married in her parents' home on December 9, 1950. Catherine went with Chick to Texas where he was in the Army. Their first child was born in Texas in December 1952.
After returning to Michigan, they had 2 more children and built their life in Middleville. They lived on Shaw Lake Road where she taught herself to decorate cakes with books from a correspondence course, and so began her legacy. She made birthday cakes, graduation cakes, shower cakes, wedding cakes, and even a school project made from cake. Any cake that needed to be made. If the cake was for a Sunday event, she always put all the money from the cake in the church offering. Catherine worked in a few bakeries but mostly people came to her house and picked up their cake. She loved to crochet, and sew, and enjoyed doing ceramics. Catherine and Chick always enjoyed square dancing and playing cards, but mostly they enjoyed being the best cheerleaders a grandkid ever had. They had 45 years of a loving marriage. Catherine was widowed at the age of 65. She continued baking cakes, spending time with family and friends, and still cheering on the kids. She enjoyed many, many years of volunteering at Pennock Hospital. She was an active member of Middleville United Methodist Church and UMW.
Catherine is survived by her children, Berl (Terri) Moma, Mary (Doug) Cisler, Marc (Nancy) Moma, her 8 beloved grandchildren, and her 19 great-grandchildren, brother Kenneth (Sharon) Schondelmayer and sister-in-law Janet Schondelmayer, several nieces and nephews and special friend Juanita Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her husband Berl (Chick) Moma Sr., sister Marjorie Hall, brothers Milo, Forest, Glen, and John Schondelmayer, and her great-grandson Maverick Moma.
A service of Christian Burial will be held at the Middleville United Methodist Church, 111 Church St., Middleville, MI 49333 on Sunday, June 30, 2024, at 2 pm. Arrangements by Girrbach Funeral Home. To leave an online condolence visit www.girrbachfuneralhome.net.
