Charles Arthur Flora

February 4, 1931 — April 29, 2015

Charles A.  Flora, age 84, of Middleville, MI, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday April 29, 2015, at Thornapple Manor, after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease.

Charles was born on February 4, 1931, in Ludington, MI.
He attended Elementary School in Ludington, Junior High at Lee School in Grand Rapids and graduated high school from Thornapple Kellogg School in Middleville in 1948.  He worked several different places including the IGA store in Middleville, The Village of Middleville, Suburban Propane and Gas Co. in Lakeland, Florida, Thorapple Kellogg School as a night custodian, and retired from Bradford White Corp. in 1994 after 26 years of service.

He married the love of his life, Betty Jean Popps, on February 17, 1949, and together they raised four children.
Chuck loved his wife and family beyond measure. He was a man of peace and was a kind gentle soul.  He expressed his creativity in many ways over the years from photography, jewelry making, stained glass, and in recent years, he carved walking sticks.  Chuck loved to camp, look for agates on Lake Superior, and hunt morel mushrooms.  He loved the Lord Jesus Christ and accepted HIM as his Savior as a young man; he also loved World and US history, geography, coin collecting and antiques.

Betty preceded him in death on August 18, 2013, after 63 years of marriage.  His parents Chester and Mary Flora, his brother, Alfred Flora, sisters, Juanita Vander Kooy, Betty Lou Michaels and best friend Neal Cook, also preceded him in death.

Charles is survived by his four children, Charles R. (Melissa) Flora of Middleville, MI, Katy (Jim) Burr of Hastings, MI, Bruce Flora of Leesburg, FL and Cindi (Michael) Acton of Allegan, MI.  Three grandchildren, Jesse (Cassie) Slater of Allegan, MI, Amanda (Gerrit) Keizer of Sparta, MI and Russell (Marissa) Slater of Caledonia, MI.  Seven great-grandchildren, Owen, Eva, Ashton and Lula Slater, Ryan and Madelyn Keizer and Elias Slater.  Two sisters Esther Willson of Greenville, South Carolina and Lucille Clay of Grand Rapids, MI and life long friend Marion (Cook) Zasadil of Hastings MI.

Graveside services were performed, on Friday May 1, 2015, by son in-law Michael Acton at Rutland Township Cemetery with readings by Charles' sister Lucy Clay and friend Marion Zasadil.

Memorial contributions can be made to Thornapple Manor in Hastings, MI.  Their kind care and support went above and beyond, and the family will be forever grateful for the kindness and service.
