Clarence "Gene" Eugene Service

Clarence Eugene (Gene) Service, age 83, passed away November 4, 2025 after a brief illness. Gene was born December 10, 1941, to Andrew and Christana (Pickthorn) Service, the youngest of 6 children.  He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Herbert and wife Ruthann, Don and wife Henrietta, sisters Wilma and husband Junior Bump, and Margaret Ashcraft.

Gene grew up in the Nashville and Hastings area, graduating from Nashville W K Kellogg School in 1962, where he played football, basketball and track.  In track he holds the record for the fastest quarter mile for the School.  He was good at any sport he played.

Geno was a phenomenal basketball player known throughout SW Michigan. As an adult, he played for many years in the Hastings Men's Basketball League.  He was also  a natural at golf.  Most people settle for one hole-in-one. Not Geno.  He scored his third hole-in-one at the age of 82 at Orchard Hills Golf Course.  He was also a lifelong Detroit Lions fan, whether they were winning or losing.

Gene was never one to pass up a card game, a trip to Walldorff's, or a visit to the casino to play poker on the slot machines.  His personality was a happy, fun-loving guy, who perhaps missed his calling as a stand-up comic.  To know Gene was to laugh with him. He will be missed in the town of Hastings.  The Shop will go on with his son Greg taking the helm.

Gene is survived by his son Greg Service, his brother John and his wife Dorothy of Dowling, and many cousins, nieces and nephews from Michigan, Nashville TN,Virginia Beach VA, all of whom loved to come visit with him

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday November 22, 2025, visitation 11:00-11:30 with a service at Noon, Luncheon to follow at the The Country Chapel Church in Dowling, Michigan.
