Deetta Louise Nicholas

DeEtta Louise Nicholas of Hastings Michigan died on December 11, 2020 at age 93.  She was born on September 23, 1927 in Todd County, South Dakota the daughter of Frederick and Laverne (Ziegler) Menke.  She was a 1946 graduate of Mission High School and then went on to receive a teaching certificate from Dakota Normal School in Spearfish South Dakota.  She married Roland Jean Nicholas on May 24, 1949 in a small rural church in Carter South Dakota.  After raising four children she took a job at Tanger Elementary School in Plymouth, Michigan.  She was in charge of the kitchen where she was known for her legendary cinnamon rolls and cookies, until she retired in 1984.  She always stayed busy doing crafts, sewing, gardening, baking, walking, and painting pictures.  She and Roland were square dancers for over 30 years.  They also enjoyed playing cards and entertaining friends.

DeEtta was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Laverne Menke, sister Bonita Copeland, Ruth Schaefer, and brother Ronald Menke.  She is survived by her husband of 71 years Roland Nicholas, daughter Sharon (Jeff) Mooney of Howell, Mi., son Steven (Tami) Nicholas of Hastings Mi., son Russell (Marie) Nicholas of Hastings Mi., daughter Karen (Dennis) Benefield of Pinckney, Mi. Grandchildren Cristin (Greg) Galperin, Kim (Kyle) Halbert, Ryan (Kelly) Nicholas, Nathan (Anna) Nicholas, Brittany (Jeff) Yenoir, Amanda Nicholas, Brandon Nicholas, Ashley Benefield, Dylan Benefield and 13 great- grandchildren.
