Edward E Slocum, age 83 of Hastings, died Monday, February 4, 2008 at Thornapple Manor of Hastings. He was born October 23, 1924, in Hastings. The son of Harold and Gladys (Groat) Slocum. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1941 and attended MSU for 1 year. He married Juanita A Belson, June 7, 1943. Ed has spent all of his life farming. In 1967 he went into partnership with his son David. He then retired in 1990. One of Ed's hobbies was raising Llamas, which he has done for many years. He was honored in 1990 by the Barry Soil and Water Conservation District, receiving the Dow Award, as well as the Co-Operators of the Year award. In 1995 he also received the Water Quality Stewart award. In 1999 he received the Rotary distinguished service award. He was a Justice of the Peace for six years. Member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows for over 50 years. Ed was also a member of the Hastings Moose and Elks Lodges. He was on the Gregory school board for many years, until it closed. He was active in the Democratic party. \r
He was preceded in death by his parents. Ed is survived by his wife of almost 65 years, Juanita, his son David (Sharon) Slocum of Hastings, his daughter Diana (Jack) Phillips of Hastings, Grandchildren Eric and Jene'e Phillips, Rachel and Justin Wilson, Timothy and Dianne Slocum, Allen Slocum and 9 Great grandchildren, his brother Gail (Mary) Slocum of New York, Kenneth (Dorothy) Slocum of Gun Lake and Florida, a sister Linda (Charles) Vreeland of Kalamazoo. \r
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 6 to 8pm at the Girrbach Funeral Home in Hastings. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 7, 2008 at 11am at the Girrbach Funeral Home in Hastings. Pastor Russell A Sarver, officiating. Burial will be at Hastings Township cemetery. Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements by: Girrbach Funeral Home, Hastings, MI.
