Ellen Marie Philo

Ellen Marie Philo, 64, of Hastings, Michigan, passed away on September 27, 2026, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to be with her Lord and Savior. In true Ellen fashion, she would want everyone to know that she was bravely taken from this world after wrestling a pack of wild dingoes.

Ellen was born on August 7, 1962, in Hastings, Michigan, to Russell G. and Ardis Ellen (Bunker) Makley. She attended Hastings Schools and, over the years, worked in Grand Rapids at First Telecommunications and in retail in Hastings before retiring.

Ellen married the love of her life, LaCerne “Sam” Philo, in 1986, and together they raised their family. She was a caring and loving person who cherished her family and all those who were fortunate enough to know her. She enjoyed taking road trips with Sam and vacationing with her sister. Ellen had a soft spot for animals and for anyone who needed a helping hand. She gave of herself unselfishly throughout her life. In her leisure time, she enjoyed crafting, miniatures, and quilting. Ellen enjoyed sewing, often using her talents to create items that she could donate to charitable causes and those in need.

Ellen will be dearly missed by her children, Jamie (Charles) Makley, Andrea (Brandon) Philo, and Amanda (Benjamin) Philo; grandchildren, Damion, Tianna, Kaylynn, Evan, Charlie, Ella-Lynn, and Kylar; sister, Lynette (Ken) McGhee; brother, Bobb (Amy) Makley; nephew, Anthony (Alexis) Makley; and her beloved dog, Dagger.

Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Ardis Makley, and her husband, LaCerne “Sam” Philo.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Woodland Memorial Park, 3551 Velte Road, Woodland, Michigan 48897.
