Gary John Thaler, age 79, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2026, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was born on August 27, 1946, in Hastings, Michigan, to Howard John Thaler and Bertha (Fausey) Thaler.
Gary graduated from Thornapple Kellogg High School with the Class of 1964 before proudly serving his country in the United States Army from 1966 to 1969. During the Vietnam War he was a helicopter parts specialist and finished his career stationed in Fairbanks Alaska. On May 6, 1972, he married the love of his life, Susan Mae Price. Together they shared more than 54 years of marriage, raising a family built on love, hard work, and helping others.
Gary began his career with Freeport Supply as a serviceman before dedicating many years to Thornapple Kellogg Schools. Starting in maintenance, he advanced to Maintenance Supervisor before retiring, only to return later as the district's Energy Manager. He also spent time working in maintenance for East Grand Rapids Schools. His commitment to education and the community extended beyond his career, serving eight years on the Thornapple Kellogg School Board.
A man who believed in giving back, Gary generously volunteered throughout the community. He was a proud member of the American Legion, Freeport Boosters, Freeport Historical Society, and Freeport Good Works, always willing to lend his time and talents wherever they were needed.
Gary found joy in fishing, hunting, golfing with friends, traveling, and building and repairing just about anything. His family lovingly called him the "fix-it man" because if Gary couldn't fix it, nobody could. Whether it was plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, or another project, he approached every task with skill and determination. More importantly, if someone needed help, Gary would set aside whatever he was doing to be there for them. His kindness, generosity, and willingness to serve others were among the qualities that defined his life.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Gene and Gayle Thaler.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Susan; his son, Curt (Tyesha) Thaler; his daughter, Aimee (Jason) Burns; his cherished grandchildren, Matthias, Abby (Colin Bisel), Arianna, Toby, Bethany, Rebecca, and Caleb; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and countless friends whose lives were touched by his kindness and steady presence.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026 at 1:00 PM with a reception to follow at Hastings Free Methodist Church, 2635 M-43 Hwy, Hastings, MI 49058. Arrangements by Girrbach Funeral Home. To leave online condolences visit www.girrbachfuneralhome.net.
