Helen Ruth Root age 86 of Hastings, passed away April 16, 2016 at her home.
Helen was born in Centralia, Washington on August 29, 1929, the daughter of Jerry Robert Chumbley; adopted by Edward W. East and Mary Ethel Robbins. She graduated from Everett High School in 1947. Helen married Richard Ellis Root on October 4, 1948.
Helen worked for the State of Michigan for many years and was active in the Democratic Party most of her life. She was vice chair of the Michigan Democratic Party and at one point ran for the Michigan House of Representatives.
Helen enjoyed gardening, reading, doing puzzles and stained glass. Her favorite thing to do was spend time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Helen was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Ethel East, father, E.W. East, father, Jerry Robert Chumbley and son, Wesley John Root.
She is survived by her son, Mike (Danna) Root, daughter, Cheryl (Root) Merrill, grandchildren: Tyler (Ruthie) Root, Rory (Sarah) Root, Jesse (Charlene) Root, Erin Root, Andrea Root and Dave McAllister, Stevi (Andrew) Barnett, Cyowa Merrill and Ezori Merrill, great grandchildren, Chase, Sophia, Cooper, Dylon, Kylee, Grayson, Damon, Joshua, Abriel and Keiryn, and brother LaVern Chumbley.
Respecting Helen's wishes, no services are being held.
