Helen May Schantz passed away on February 3, 2024, in Hastings, Michigan. Helen was born on August 31, 1927, in Johnstown Township, Michigan, the daughter of Gerald A. and Myrtle (Bagley) Dunn. She attended Monroe Country School. Helen's early years in the rural landscapes of Michigan instilled in her a profound appreciation for the land and the joys of domestic life.
Helen's heart found its match twice in life, first with Harold Cheeseman and then with Victor Schantz, whom she married on February 16, 1957. Together with Victor, she embraced the life of a dairy farmer's wife, a role she cherished and in which she flourished.
Though she was preceded in death by her parents, both her husbands, her brothers Roy, Ray, Archie, and Earl Dunn, her sisters Ruth Lentz and Sylvia Ferris, and her daughter-in-law Nancy Schantz, Helen's legacy continues through her loving family. She is survived by her devoted children, Darold (Carol) Cheeseman, Duane (Lesley) Schantz, and Diane Earl, all of Nashville, Michigan, Victor Schantz of Hastings, Michigan, and Mary Jean Smith of Battle Creek, Michigan, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought her immeasurable joy, will carry forward her spirit of kindness and generosity.
Helen relished the time spent with her grandchildren, her relatives, her cats and her kitten. She took great pleasure in cooking for her loved ones, and her meals were more than just food; they were an expression of her love and care.
In her final days, Helen was comforted by the unwavering support of her granddaughter, Darin Cheeseman, and the family extends heartfelt thanks for her compassionate care during this difficult time.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held later in the spring to honor Helen's memory. Arrangements by Girrbach Funeral Home. For gathering updates or to leave an online condolence visit www.girrbachfuneralhome.net.
