James Richard Cotant, age 66, of Hastings, Michigan, passed away surrounded by family on October 23, 2025.
Jim was born on April 21, 1959, in Hastings, Michigan, the son of Richard and Joann (Roseberry) Cotant. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1977 and went on to study Industrial Science at Western Michigan University. Jim was a dedicated employee of Consumers Energy, where he worked faithfully for over 40 years.
On June 20, 1981, Jim married the love of his life, Christine Kennedy. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and family.
Jim had many passions throughout his life. He loved studying the weather and proudly served as a certified storm spotter. A lifelong NASCAR enthusiast, Jim attended many races and was an unwavering Dale Earnhardt Sr. fan. Summers were often spent with family at their cottage on Thornapple Lake, where countless memories were made. In later years, he enjoyed traveling to North Myrtle Beach and Ludington. Above all, Jim cherished his family, especially his grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Papa."
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Joann Cotant, and his stepmother, Shirley (Belson) Cotant.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Christine Cotant of Hastings, Michigan; son, Chadwick James Cotant of Hastings, Michigan; daughter, Melissa (Evan) Rees of Bellevue, Michigan; grandchildren Mackenzie, Lillian, Claire, Elijah, and Grace Rees of Bellevue, Michigan; brother, Ron (Jill) Cotant of Fort Wayne, Indiana; sisters, Nancy (Lou) Cotant Burroughs of Delton, Michigan, Amy Teunessen of Ravenna, Nebraska, and Judy (Scott) Fletcher of Ludington, Michigan; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 4th at The Jefferson, 103 W. State St., Hastings, MI. A luncheon will follow at the same location.

Jim will be remembered for his humor, loyalty, and love for his family. His presence will be deeply missed and his memory cherished by all who knew him.
