James Allen Kubek, of Hastings, Michigan, passed away on April 17, 2026, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at the age of 80. He was born on June 12, 1945, in Mt. Clemens, Michigan, to John Kubek and Bernice Potenski.
James proudly served his country in the United States Navy. While stationed in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, he met the love of his life, Alice Holbrook. The two were united in marriage on November 7, 1966, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with love, faith, and devotion. Their commitment was further blessed when on April 3, 1981, their marriage was convalidated (they received the sacrament of marriage) at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.
Jim worked for many years as a supervisor at Bradford White, where he was known for his strong work ethic and leadership before retiring in the early 2000s. Outside of work, he found great joy in fishing, camping, riding motorcycles, and traveling—especially trips out east. He cherished time spent vacationing with family and creating lasting memories. Known for his playful spirit, Jim often showed his affection through good-natured teasing—if he didn’t pick on you, he didn’t love you.
Jim and Alice made their home on Algonquin Lake, where they raised their family and built a life centered on love, laughter, and generosity. A devoted, lifelong member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Hastings, Jim lived his faith through kindness and service to others. He and Alice were known for their giving hearts, always ready to lend a hand to those in need.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Alice Kubek; and his sister, Joyce (Ron) Gank.
Jim is survived by his children: John (Rita) Kubek, Joe (Sharon) Kubek, and Julie (Larry) Spicer. He also leaves behind many cherished grandchildren: Amberlynn (Justin) Roll, Ariell (Steven) Brown, James (Shian) Kubek, Terry Turnblom, Amanda Turnblom, Lacey Kubek, Shelby (Kasey) Irwin, Allyson (Matt) Fox, Kayla Gorodenski (Dylan Burger), Cooper Gorodenski, and Owen Spicer; as well as numerous great-grandchildren: Kaleigh, Nathan, Eli, Wayne, Landon, Peyton, Grant, Lincoln, a baby girl Kubek, Autumn, Colton, Madalynn, Krew, Kash, Loralei, Paisley, Charlee, Ryliann, and Tate. He also leaves behind many honorary children and grandchildren who were blessed by his love and guidance.
