John F. Kowal age 89 of Hastings, passed away December 27, 2013 at Thornapple Manor in Hastings.
John was born on June 5, 1924 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the son of John B. and Hazel (Haley) Kowal. He attended Chappel School in Leighton Township. John honorably served in the U.S. Army from 1943 until 1946. He married Virginia Hammons on September 13, 1970.
John owned and operated K & K Used Cars in Grand Rapids until 1987. He was a member of the Hastings Baptist Church. John enjoyed gardening, traveling and working on cars.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Hazel Kowal, brothers, Bernard Kowal, and Patrick Kowal, sister, Lorraine Hoffman, three grandchildren: Timothy Steeby, Rebecca Hammons and Kimberley Hammons.
John is survived by his wife, Virginia Kowal of Hastings, sons: Michael Steeby of Hastings, Pat (Anita) Kowal of Missouri, Mike Kowal of Grand Rapids, Robert (Diane) Kowal of Plainwell, Bill Kowal of Grand Rapids, Kevin (Gloria) Kowal of Grand Rapids; daughters: Donna Blue of Hastings, Carol (John) Bolthouse of Hastings, Kathy (Dennis) Armstrong of Hastings Jane Kowal of Grand Rapids, Jean (David) Ramos of Grand Rapids, Joan Kowal of Grand Rapids, 21 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Memorial contribution may be made to the Life Enrichment Program at Thornapple Manor, 2700 Nashville Rd., Hastings, MI 49058.
A Memorial Service will be held on January 6, 2014 at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church, 309 E. Woodlawn Ave., Hastings, MI 49058, with full Military Honors.
