Judy L. Sloan, age 77 of Grand Rapids, and formally Middleville, transcended peacefully to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, February 29, 2024. Judy was at home, surrounded by family and loving friends, upon her departure.
Judy was born in Grand Rapids Michigan on May 15, 1946. The daughter of Russ Thorne and Evelyn Thorne. She attended Grandville High School, and graduated from Thornapple Kellogg High School in 1970, Judy was also a graduate of Chic School of Cosmetology.
Judy married Todd Sloan on October 21, 1965. Together Todd and Judy built Lynnal Associates, an Amway business, with which they had success throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Judy also enjoyed owning and operating her own beauty salon, Hair We Are, for more than 30 years. Operating these businesses introduced Judy and Todd to many lifelong friends.
Judy spent most of her life in Middleville remaining close with her aunt Rita (John) Mulligan, brother Gary (Barb) Thorne, cousins, Craig (Debbie) Mulligan, Dave Mulligan, nieces, and nephews Tracy (Doug) Warsen, Shelly (Steve) Nies, Jim (Martha) Thorne. Judy also considered many people in her community as family including but not limited to her "third son", Randy Sharp, the Shellenbarger's, the Sharp's, the Tolar's, the Boysen's, the Munjoy's, the Simmons's, the Vandermuelen's, the Brown's, the Farguson's, Pat Sorensen, Debbie Patton, Helen Mendez, and Becky Wibble.
Judy loved traveling, entertaining and conversing with friends and family, volunteering, and being a part of the community. Judy was involved with Rotary International and was the first female President of the Middleville Rotary Club, which got her involved in volunteer work in Belize and Nicaragua. Rotary also introduced Judy to her daughter in spirit, Ana Sloan-Caldera, and her son in spirit, Tom Wendling. Judy was a proud mother who supported her son's and grandchildren's passions in life. Judy enjoyed camping and RVing with the Looney Tunes RVing group and enjoyed spending time with her friends in Texas during the winters at Tropic Star RV Resort. Judy was a kind and loving woman, who always had room for extra people at her dinner table and would always find room in her home for someone, if they needed a place to stay. Service to others was the foundation of Judy's life. Judy was an inspiration to all who knew her she will be missed more than words could express.
Judy was preceded in death by her husband , Todd Sloan, her parents, Russ and Evelyn Thorne, mother in spirit (aunt) Rita Mulligan, uncle "sweetums" John Mulligan, her brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Barb Thorne, her mother and father in law, Robert and Maxine Sloan, sister in law, Susan Deurloo, brother in law, John Sloan, sister in law Sunny Strouse, and brother in law, Don Sloan, and her beloved aunts, uncles, and grandparents.
She is survived by her 2 sons, Todd (Mary) Sloan of Kalamazoo, and Russell Sloan-Caldera of Grand Rapids, 5 grandchildren, Ian (Leanne) Sloan, Mason Sloan, Devin (Lauren) Sloan, Camilo Sloan-Caldera and Meyling Gisselle Caldera Narvaez, 4 great grandchildren Sylas Sloan, Leo Sloan, Oliver Sloan, Gabriel Alexander Niño Caldera several beloved cousins, nieces and nephews, brother in law, Richard Sloan, brother in law, Steve Sloan. sister-in-law, Linda Niezurawski, her "French family", her "Nicaraguan family", and many loving friends.
Judy received amazing medical care throughout her life, and was very thankful to all the doctors, nurses, aides, and caregivers she had the pleasure of knowing, especially a "special friend of Rustie's". Hospice nurse practitioner Laura Maclam.

Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at 11:00AM at St. Rose of Lima Church, 805 S. Jefferson, Hastings, MI, 49058, Fr. Jeff Hanley, Celebrant, with Visitation at 10:00AM and Rosary at 10:30AM. A luncheon and celebration of Judy's life will follow mass in the basement of the church.
