Kap I Kim passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2017, at the age of 94.
She is survived by her three adult children, Yong Tok "Doug" (Kyong "Kathy") Yi, Sok Sun "Yung-Mi" (Robert) Snow, and Hyong Sun Lee. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Susan (Edward) Zurface, Anthony (Kathryn) Snow, Samantha (David) Welton, Han Jew Lee, Han Young Lee, and Joshua Yi, and two great grandchildren, Bailey Zurface and Nathan Zurface.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, gardening, and helping raise her youngest grandson Joshua. Grandma or Halmeoni ("Grandma" in Korean), worked tirelessly to support her children and grandchildren her entire life. In 1976, she left Korea with her two youngest children and moved to Michigan, where her oldest child Yung-mi resided with her family, and where all her children continue to reside today. Without knowing any English, she took a stamping job in a factory in Grand Rapids. Nine years later, she would go on to help her son and daughter-in-law, Yong Tok and Kyong, operate Barry Cleaners in Hastings until she retired in her 70s. Even in retirement, Halmeoni never slowed down and continued doing chores in and around the house, gardening, and spending time outdoors.
As the loving matriarch of the family, she always put others before herself and was the type of person to never burden anyone, even to the detriment of her own health. She will be most remembered for her strength and resilience, her character, and as someone who enjoyed family and nature. She is greatly loved and missed by her family and friends.
Services were held at the Korean Grace Christian Reformed Church, in Grand Rapids, MI on September 11, 2017 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm.
