Marvin Kent Verus, age 79 of Hastings, passed away peacefully, Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Bronson Hospital in Battle Creek, Michigan.
Marvin was born in Flint, Michigan on May 22, 1936, the son of Leonard Darrell and Josephine Florence (Sedlow) Verus. He attended and graduated from Clio High school in 1954. Marvin married Miss Patsy Lee Havener on November 20, 1958 in Elizabeth City, NC.
Marvin was a career non-commissioned officer, serving 20 years with the U.S. Marine Corps. He enlisted May 18, 1955 at the age of 18. He attended the Air Force Fleet Air Intelligence training center, completing the course in air intelligence on December 18, 1957. He was promoted to Sergeant on September 1, 1958. He retired from the Intelligence Division while serving as Master Sergeant with the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing, in 1974. Marvin served a total of 3 tours in the Vietnam War, in the Intelligence Division, scouting behind enemy lines. Marvin accepted a position at Hastings City Bank in January 1975, and soon after, was promoted to Loan Officer. He was promoted to Loan Administrator in May of 1981. After retiring from Hastings City Bank, he was employed with John Deere.
Marvin was an avid bowler for over 60 years. His life long love of bowling began as a teenager, when he was hired as a manual pin-setter at the Clio Bowling Alley. Marvin was a member of many leagues, most recently with the Senior League at Knotke's Bowl in Battle Creek, attaining 300 game level. He was also a Hawaiian State Archery Champ, 2 consecutive years in the 1960's. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. Marvin enjoyed morel mushrooming, gardening and landscaping, as well.
He was preceded in death by his Parents, his Father-in-law and Mother-in-law, and brothers, Dick Junior, Duke, Fred and Bob, sisters-in-law's Eva, Dorothy, Jill and brother-in-law, Dennis.
Marvin is survived by the love of his life, wife, Patsy of Hastings, sons, Brett (Sandi) Verus of Grand Rapids, Mike (Rica) Verus of Hastings, and Jim (Gina) Verus of Wayland, brother, Jerry of Clio; brother-in-law, Leroy Shumaker and John Brown of Clio; grandchildren, Megan, Ben, Jason, Heather, Alison, Joe, Andrew, Aaron, Morgan and Karrson, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Marvin will be honored with a private military ceremony for close family members, on Wednesday, March 30
, 2016 at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek, Michigan. Pastor Steve Olmstead will officiate the service.
