Mary Susan Lannon

Mary Susan Lannon, a dedicated geologist, educator, and nature enthusiast, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025. She was 64.

Mary was born on December 11, 1960, in Ludington, Michigan, to Thomas Richard Jr. and Mary Ann (Kulwicki) Lannon. A 1979 graduate of St. Joseph High School, she went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Geology from Western Michigan University, followed by Master's Degree in Geology from Southern Illinois University, and a second Master's in Hydrogeology from Western Michigan University.

On October 2, 1992, Mary married Brad Kevin Patzer. Together, they shared 27 wonderful years before his passing.

With a passion for science and education, Mary spent over two decades in the greater Grand Rapids area working as a geologist and hydrogeologist, as well as an inspiring instructor at Grand Rapids Community College. Her love for geology was contagious—she brought rocks to life for her students, sharing her enthusiasm and deep knowledge with joy and energy.

Mary had a lifelong commitment to environmental preservation and was a proud supporter of Nature Conservancy. She also found great joy in raising black, chocolate, and yellow Labrador Retrievers.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Margaret "Meg" McAllister, and her beloved husband Brad. She is survived by her siblings Tom (Jane) Lannon, Brian (Darlene) Lannon, Beth (Michael Cloud) Lannon-Cloud, Maureen (Steven Leuty) Lannon, Kevin (Catherine) Lannon; sister-in-law Cindy Kaser; and her cherished nieces and nephews Kestrel, Allison, Stuart, Jacob, Sam, Tyler, Adam, Wil, MaryBeth, Ian, Lindsey and Brandon.
