August 12, 1957 — April 6, 2018

Hastings

Matthew "Matt" Reed Wood passed away Friday, April 6, 2018, after a long battle with cancer.

Matt, age 60, of Hastings, was born August 12, 1957, in Carmel, California, to William and Hattie (Gates) Wood.  The family moved back to the Grand Rapids area when Matt was an infant.

Matt attended Forest Hills Central, graduating in 1975.   He enlisted in the Navy while a Senior in High School and served until 1979, receiving an honorable discharge.

In Matt's younger years he worked in construction with his father William.  After the service he had his own sign business for 13 years in Texas.  Matt moved back to Michigan in 1997, where he worked in manufacturing.  His last place of employment was Ventra in Grand Rapids, when he had to go on disability.

Matt married Terresa (Peck), the love of his life on September 15, 2001.   He was a member of the Hastings First United Methodist Church.  Matt loved air museums, air shows, and submarines.  He loved the water and his dream was to have his own submarine.  Matt was involved in a focus fusion group and 3-D printers.   Matt also loved spending time with family.

Matt is survived by his wife, Terresa; step-son Aaron (Lorna) Rankin and grandson, Oliver; mother, Hattie Wood; sister, Sue (Doug) Atkinson; brother Mark Wood; mother-in-law, Barbara Bedford, brothers-in-laws, Carl (Jane) Peck, Doug (Kim) Peck, Eugene (Linda) Bedford and many nieces and nephews.

Matt was preceded in death by his father, William Wood and brother, John Myron.

Respecting Matt's wishes, cremation has taken place and his family will be having a Celebration of Life Gathering at a later date.
