Ruth Carol Johnston age 92, was called home on Friday, February 1,2008 at Thornapple Manor in Hastings, MI. Born on August 14, 1915 to Carl and Clara Evelyn Turner in New Castle, PA, Ruth grew up in Princeton, PA. Mr. Turner died serving in the US Army in France during the First World War, when Ruth was 3 years old. She graduated from Princeton High School and New Castle Business College. She worked for National Radiator Works for several years. She married Thomas L. Johnston in February 9,1940. They lived in New Castle, then Gardner Stop, PA until 1966, when they move to Hastings, MI, then briefly to Salem, OH, then back to Hastings, MI. Ruth enjoyed rollerskating in her early years, she also enjoyed bowling, golfing, painting, quilting,knitting and sewing. She made all her daughter's bridal and attendant's gowns. Cooking and baking were her forte; Ruth's Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter dinners were sumptuous feasts, and her children were raised on homemade bread, pies, and cookies. Ruth delighted in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Princeton Memorial United Presbyterian Church in Princeton; and the First United Presbyterian Church, Grace Wesleyan Church, Order Of The Eastern Star, and attended the Quimby United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the Hastings Women's Club, and Hastings Country Club, Friends of The Library, and was an active volunteer at Charlton Park. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas L. Johnston; infant twins in 1946; mother and father; sisters Helen, Eleanor, Elizabeth, and Jane; and great-grandson Jacob Kresh. She is survived by daughter Evelyn (John) Koprivnikar of Grove City, PA; Jennifer (Karl) Schroeder of Holland, MI; and Rebecca (Jeffrey) Parker of Hastings; sons Thomas, Jr. (Patty) of New Castle, PA; William of Santa Fe, NM; James (Sherry) of Franklin, PA; John (Diana) of Hastings; and Robert (Elizabeth) of Holland, MI; daughter-in-law Margie Johnston of Hastings; 21 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Monday, February 4, 2008 from 5-8p.m. at the Girrbach Funeral Home in Hastings, Michigan and at Cunningham Funeral Home in New Castle, PA.
