Susan Marie Mix – A Life of Kindness, Compassion and Service
Susan Marie Mix, of Hastings, Michigan, passed away on October 9, 2026, at the age of 71. Born on May 9, 1955, Susan lived a life marked by kindness, compassion, generosity, and an unwavering devotion to the people she loved.
A 1973 graduate of Hastings High School, Susan spent much of her life caring for others, both personally and professionally. From an early age, she helped raise and nurture her younger siblings, offering the love, patience, and guidance that would remain hallmarks of her character throughout her life. She carried that same devotion into raising her son, Casimir Mix and nephew Daegan Mix, whose lives she helped shape with love and care.
Susan had a naturally giving spirit and found genuine happiness in the company of family and friends. She was someone who could be counted on, especially during life's more difficult moments, always willing to lend a helping hand, offer encouragement, or simply be there when someone needed her. Her generosity was not something she sought recognition for; it was simply part of who she was.
Susan also dedicated many years of her professional life to serving the Hastings community. She worked at Pennock Hospital during the 1970s and early 1980s before beginning a long and dedicated career with the United States Postal Service, where she served her community until her retirement. Through both professions, she contributed to the everyday well-being of the town she called home.
Susan had a lifelong love of music and especially enjoyed seeing her favorite bands perform live. Coming of age in the 1960s and 1970s, she embraced the music, culture, and free-spirited energy of her generation. Her younger siblings fondly remember entering her room as though stepping into another world, surrounded by purple shag carpet, peace signs, blacklight posters, and the unforgettable sounds of Janis Joplin, the Allman Brothers Band, and The Band. It was a world filled with music, individuality, and discovery, and one that left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to share it. Susan's love of music was more than a personal passion; it became a gift she passed along to others, helping shape their own appreciation for music and the joy it brings to life.
Above all, Susan will be remembered for her generous heart, caring nature, and the quiet but meaningful ways she enriched the lives of those around her. Her legacy lives on in the family she nurtured, the friendships she cherished, and the countless acts of kindness that made a difference in the lives of others.
She gave freely of herself, loved deeply, and leaves behind a lifetime of memories and gratitude among those fortunate enough to have known her.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Mix Sr. and Rhoda (Winick) Mix; brothers Frank Mix, Jr., Steven Mix, and Robert Mix, and sister Rebecca Mix.
She is survived by her son Casimir Mix; brother Samuel (Kris Ruger) Mix; sisters Laura Mix and Myra Mix; nephews Daegan (Molly) Mix, Nick (Dannielle) Kuzmin; and sister-in-law Marlis (Frank Mix, Jr) Lange. In addition to family, Deb Kilmartin, her lifelong friend of 60 years.
“Grief is the last act of love we have to give those we loved. Where there is deep grief, there was great love.”
